Seeing a show at the Empty Bottle is unlike anything else. Sure, it gets totally packed, but the sound is almost always excellent and they tend to book some excellent acts. The stage is nicely raised but not too high, so you can see the band well regardless of where you are standing in the bar. The bartenders are nice and during shows there are a couple of girls that walk around and get drink orders so you don't lose your proximity to the stage. The drink prices are also very reasonable, and they always have cheap beers in the bottle available.
The one problem with the Empty Bottle is that it isn't near any L stops so you have to take a bus. The best thing to do is find a friend who wants to go to the show and has a car - parking can take a trip or two around the block but you almost always find a space within ten or fifteen minutes.
They do book a bunch of shows out to other venues that they own like the Open End Gallery and Logan Square which aren't nearly as cool as the Empty Bottle, so just check out where the show is being held.
